Cross Cultural Learning and Teaching in Vocational Education and Training (CCLVET)

Program: Leonardo da Vinci

Duration: 1. 10. 2008 - 30. 09. 2010 (24 months)

Short description:

As part of an international consortium of nine partners led by FH JOANNEUM, KADIS investigates the cultural differences in learning and teaching in adult education. The project (CCLVET - Cross Cultural Learning and Teaching in Vocational Education and Training) is co-funded by the Leonardo da Vinci programme of the European Union.

The “Leonardo da Vinci” project is designed to analyse the different learning styles of adults in different European countries and summarise the results in the form of a best practice guide.

Due to the increasing number of Member States (and Accessing Countries) a further increase in both work- and learning mobility is expected within the next years. Parallel to this upward trend in mobility there is a rising need for improved qualifications which fulfill the requirements of a fast moving economy. As a consequence, VET institution and universities in both the EU and the Accessing Countries are facing diverse types of learners with equally diverse ways of perceiving, processing and presenting information (learning styles). The learning behavior of people with different cultural background seems to differ between countries and the process of how to deliver necessary qualifications must therefore take into account cultural diversity and through that adapt the teaching behavior.

Main activities in project will include profound surveys and the production, dissemination and valorization of relevant information and teaching material and the creation of an e-based manual for teachers which supports their skills in teaching persons coming from the participating and accessing countries. Successful approaches to teaching will be investigated and put into the existing cross-cultural learning styles context. Hands-on material will be produced to advise teachers and learners how to learn and teach in a cultural diverse classroom.

Aims:

  • insights into learning styles
  • results will improve teaching skills of educators
  • institutions incorporating different approaches to learning due to the fact that learners have a different cultural background will become more attractive for people
  • an e-based manual for teachers to equip teachers and students alike with necessary tools and knowledge to improve their training
  • competence development of VET trainers and the further development of the VET learning environment

Steps:

  • Literature reviews, familiarization with VET educational system
  • Data gathering (focus groups and questionnaires)
  • E- manual
  • Pilot testing
  • CD and website
  • Conference in Sofia in 2010
